Images on the Web
There are 3 main types of images in use on the web:
- GIF - GIFs were the first graphic files to be displayed on the web. They can contain a maximum of 8-bit color information (256 colors). They are best suited for logos, line art, icons, and such. They’re also useful for creating transparent backgrounds.
- JPEG - Use JPEGS for photographs, paintings, watercolor illustrations, and anything which has a lot of color in it. They can contain a maximum of 24-bit color information (equivalent to millions of colors).
- PNG - While this format has many capabilities and has been around since 1995, it is still not rendered properly by all browsers.
Using images on your website:
- Always use the image width and height in your web pages. This will make them display faster.
- When using images on your website, make sure that the size of the image is the same size as your display. You may need to resize your images to accomplish this. You don’t want to display a 1,000 x 1,000 pixel image in an area 100 x 100 pixels. It is just wasted bandwidth to download that large picture.
- Also, you’ll want to put a text alternate on your images. This will provide a text alternative to your image for text-only access.
