- Content
- Generally speaking, aim for 200 - 250 words per page. You can use more as needed, but if you do, try to break it up by using headlines, short paragraphs, columns, and lists.
- Fonts & Colors
- Make your text easy to read. Don’t use fonts that are cute but mostly illegible. Be careful with your color choices. Readability should be your first consideration with your choice of fonts and colors.
- Navigation
- Always use clear navigation on every page. Visitors need to know where they are and how to get to other parts of your website. Navigation should be clear rather than ‘cute’. Buttons are ok, but only if their meaning is clear.
- Graphics
- Use only those graphics that are relevant to your site. This can include graphics that reflect your logo or image. Images on a page should, if possible, be 12 KB or less. Use thumbnails and alternates for larger image display.
- Meta Tags & Meta Keywords
- Use these wisely and not excessively.
- Titles
- Include a distinct Title Tag for each page on your website. Search Engines use them and so do your users. Have you ever bookmarked a page only to go back and see ‘home’ as your only clue as to what site you bookmarked?
- Privacy
- If you set up a mailing list, respect your visitor’s privacy. Never give that information out. Always provide a way for them to get off your list. Use blind CC when e-mailing your newsletter as another means of keeping your list private.
